🛻You Should've Bought a Truck!

Every weekend (and sometimes twice a week), my husband and I find ourselves at our local Home Depot. We’re DIYers at heart, usually in the middle of at least one, if not three, projects.
Usually without fail, as we walk across the parking lot, we spot it — someone trying to wrestle a full sheet of plywood or something equally as huge into the back of a tiny hatchback or sedan.
We look at each other, chuckle, and say the same thing every time: “You should’ve bought a truck.”
That simple phrase got me thinking this week about websites — specifically, about choosing the right website platform for your business. Just like you wouldn’t expect a compact car to haul a load of lumber or a refrigerator, you can’t expect every website platform to handle the weight of your goals.
🚗 Your Website Is the Vehicle of Your Business
Your website isn’t just a digital brochure; it’s how you carry your message, products, and services out into the world. Think about it this way...
The design is the paint job — what catches the eye.
The SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the engine — what gets you moving.
The platform (the builder or CMS you choose) — is the frame and powertrain that determines how much you can haul.
If all you ever need is a simple online presence — a few pages about who you are and what you offer — then any car will get you from point A to point B.
But if you’re ready to grow your business, add content that matters, build authority and consumer confidence, launch email campaigns, book appointments or events, or build a dynamic e-commerce store — you need something that’s built to handle more than just the basics.
🧰 Not Every Platform Has the Same Engine
Let’s talk about a few popular website platforms — the Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy types of the world — and what kind of “vehicles” they really are.
1. GoDaddy: The Compact Car
GoDaddy’s website builder is quick to set up, easy to use, and perfect for getting on the road fast. If you need a simple site to list your services or location, it’s a good start.
But like a small sedan, it’s not designed for heavy loads. Its SEO tools are limited, and content management options (like blogging or analytics) can feel cramped. You might get from point A to point B, but you won’t have room for much growth.
2. Squarespace: The Stylish SUV
Squarespace is beautiful. It’s known for sleek templates, clean design, and an intuitive editor — great for artists, photographers, and creative professionals.
But beneath that polished paint job, you might find limitations. SEO settings aren’t as customizable, and advanced marketing tools or integrations can be harder to implement. If you want to publish regular blogs or scale your content strategy, you may quickly fill the trunk.
3. Wix: The Reliable Truck
Wix is powerful, flexible, and built with business growth in mind. It offers drag-and-drop freedom with hundreds of templates, built-in SEO tools, and advanced features like blogs, bookings, and e-commerce.
For business owners who want to actively build content and improve search rankings, Wix is like having a sturdy pickup that’s ready to work. It can haul heavy loads — from marketing integrations to blog libraries — without breaking down under pressure.
4. WordPress: A lot of Tech under the hood
If you’re planning to go all-in on content marketing, frequent blogging, or custom integrations, WordPress might be your full-sized truck. It’s open-source, endlessly flexible, and known for strong SEO performance — but it does require more maintenance, updates, and technical know-how. For some, that’s overkill. For others, it’s freedom.
🧭 How to Know If You Need a Bigger Vehicle
You might be outgrowing your website if:
You’ve started adding more services or content and your current site feels “boxed in.”
You’re ready to start blogging or improving your Google ranking, but your platform makes it hard to customize titles, meta descriptions, or URL structure.
You want to integrate tools like online booking, email marketing, or e-commerce.
You notice your site loading slowly, struggling with mobile responsiveness, or not showing up in searches.
If any of these sound familiar — you might be driving a compact when you really need a truck.
🔧 Why the Right Platform Matters for SEO
Google indexes websites based on content structure, speed, and metadata — all of which depend on the platform you choose. Platforms like Wix and WordPress give you direct access to optimize page titles, URLs, schema markup, and internal linking — which helps search engines understand your site.
Squarespace and GoDaddy do offer basic SEO settings, but they tend to limit how much control you have. If your goal is to rank higher and reach new audiences organically, platform flexibility matters as much as good content.
💡 The Takeaway: Don’t Haul a Load of Lumber in a Compact Car
There’s nothing wrong with driving a small car — unless you’re trying to bring home a full sheet of plywood. The same goes for your website. A smaller, simpler platform may look great, but if you’re pushing its limits with content, integrations, or SEO ambitions, you’ll end up frustrated in the parking lot wondering why it won’t fit.
Choosing the right platform is about matching your goals with the right capacity. Whether that means upgrading your current site or rebuilding on a more powerful platform, the key is making sure your website can grow with you — not against you.
